Ger McDonnell Memorial Cycle 2013

Ger McDonnell Memorial Cycle PosterMayor of Limerick, Cllr. Gerry McLoughlin, will officially launch the Ger McDonnell Memorial Cycle 2013 at the Clarion Hotel, Steamboat Quay, Limerick next, May 24th at 7:30pm.

The cycle, which will take place on Saturday, 27th July at 9:00am, is dedicated to the memory of Ger McDonnell the first Irishman to climb K2, the second highest mountain on Earth.

The sponsored cycle retraces a route that Ger took from Kilcornan, Co. Limerick to Doolin, Co. Clare and raises funds for local charities, with Limerick Youth Service chosen as this year’s benefactor.

‘We’re delighted that LYS has been selected as this year’s charity particularly as Ger and his family have a close relationship with LYS,’ said Catherine Kelly, Director, LYS who added that Ger was a member of Kilcornan Youth Club.

Some well known local and national faces will attend the launch including, Meave McGrath, Ros na Run (TG4) and Aoife McLoughlin of The Voice (RTE) fame.

Nick Ryan, director of ‘The Summit,’ a documentary about Ger’s ascent of and tragic death on K2, will also attend the launch.

Ger’s colleagues from the mountaineering community including Dr. Claire O’Leary, the first Irishwoman to conquer Everest, has also sent her good wishes for the cycle launch.

LYS remains committed to supporting and encouraging young people to be active participants in shaping their futures.
