Ballynanty GYDP wins Youth Diversion Camp competition!

Well done to Callum Grant, Craig McNamara and Dara Quillinan.

Limerick Youth Service runs three Garda Youth Diversion Projects in Limerick; Ballynanty (including the areas of Killeely and Thomondgate); Irishtown (including Garryowen and Watergate) and King’s Island (St Mary’s Park). The aim of these Projects is to deter young people from becoming involved in criminality and

anti-social behaviour while engaging them in fun, educational and vocational programmes. These Projects are funded by the European Social Fund through the Irish Youth Justice Service
For the last six years Camp Diversion has been an annual event to which participants of all the Garda Youth Diversion Projects from around the country are invited to attend. This year, for the first time, the young people from the Ballynanty Youth Diversion Project took part along with young people from 18 other Projects. The Camp took place in Lough Dan in County Wicklow over three days from 9th – 11th June.

On Day Two, each Project took part in a Team Challenge that included a six mile hike, rowing, abseiling and a forest trek around the course. The team who finished the course in the fastest time won the race. The team from Ballynanty that included Callum Grant, Dara Quillinan and Craig McNamara won the completion and were crowned Camp Diversion Champions for 2010.
Project Leaders Patricia Whelan and Frank Daly, along with Community Garda Mick Bolton took the group to the Camp and were delighted with the outcome! Patricia says, ‘It was a fantastic event and we are thrilled that we were so successful in our first year! Congratulations to the team from Ballynanty!’

This year the Camp was run and organised by the Finglas Garda Youth Diversion Project under the guidance of Catholic Youth Care. Next year the annual event will be organised by the Ballynanty Project so it will be a Camp to look forward to Patricia says, ‘The title of Camp Diversion Champions has never been retained in the six years the event has been running so next year the Ballynanty Project hopes to be the first group to do so!’More to follow
