Launch of Ger McDonnell Memorial Cycle 2013
The annual Ger McDonnell Memorial Cycle was officially launched by Deputy Mayor of Limerick, Cllr. Maira Byrne, at Limerick Youth Service’s 40th anniversary celebration at the Clarion Hotel, Limerick on Friday last, May 24th.
The charity cycle, now in its 5th year, is dedicated to the memory of Ger McDonnell, the first Irishman to conquer K2, with Limerick Youth Service, chosen as this year’s benefactor.
‘Ger’s entire climbing career was dedicated to fundraising and he would be honoured that this year’s cycle is in aid of Limerick Youth Service,’ said JJ McDonnell, Ger’s brother.
Cllr. Byrne paid tribute to the McDonnell family and praised the courage they have shown in ‘turning something that broke your hearts into a positive thing in helping charities.’
LYS Director, Catherine Kelly, thanked the Ger McDonnell Trust for choosing LYS adding that the cycle will be’ LYS’s primary fundraiser in this our 40th year.’
The cycle, from Kilcornan, Co. Limerick to Doolin, Co. Clare, retraces a route that Ger took one summer’s day when he had originally set out for a pint of milk in Askeaton!
The cycle starts at 9:30am on Saturday, 27th July with sponsorship cards available from LYS.
Now in its 40th year, LYS remains committed to encouraging and supporting young people to be active participants in shaping their futures.
