Mayor Honours Team Ballynanty

BGYP Mayor PicSeven young people from Ballynanty had their success on the football field recognised by the Mayor of Limerick, Cllr. Gerry McLoughlin on Tuesday last, May 14th.

The northside natives, who are members of Limerick Youth Service’s Ballynanty Garda Youth Diversion Project, triumphed at a recent Soccer/futsal tournament hosted at LYS’s Southside Youth Space, the Factory.

‘It was a fantastic achievement and you should be very proud of yourselves,’ were the words of Cllr. McLoughlin as he spoke to the group.

‘Winning a competition once is great accomplishment, but successfully defending that title takes extra hard work and dedication,’ said the 816th Mayor of Limerick.

The Futsal /Soccer tournament took place at The Factory: Southside Youth Space, Galvone Rd and saw Garda Youth Diversion Projects from around Limerick take part.

‘We’re the best,’ laughed team captain Leroy Bennis, Ballynanty, when asked about the team’s success.

‘On behalf of the lads, I’d like to thank our coach, Frankie Daly (LYS) and Garda Shane Hickey (Mayorstone) who encouraged us at every stage to achieve our goals,’ said Leroy.

Leroy was joined on ‘Team Ballynanty,’ by Callum Grant, Nathan Hayes, Luke McMahon, Calvin Prendergast, Jonathan Roche and John Ryan.

Garda Youth Diversion Projects are community based programmes that work with young people to develop their social skills and sense of community through a diverse range of activities.

Now in its 40th year, Limerick Youth Service, which facilitates three GYDP in Ballynanty, Irishtown and King’s Island, would like to thank An Garda Síochána, Irish Youth Justice Service and the Dept of Children and Youth Affairs for their support.
