Limerick Youth Service’s Garda Youth Diversion Projects (GYDP) work with young people (12-18yrs) who are involved in, or a risk of becoming involved in anti-social behaviour and crime.

Our Garda Youth Diversion Projects work in partnership with the Irish Youth Justice Service, An Garda Siochana and part supported by the Irish Government and the European Social Fund as part of the ESF Programme for Employability, Inclusion and Learning (PEIL) 2014-2020″.

Our three Garda Youth Diversion Projects are located in Ballynanty, Irishtown and King’s Island with our outreach team engaging with young people in the Limerick City Cente (Henry St) Garda area.

AIMS:

Working either one to one and/or group work, our Garda Youth Diversion Projects support young people in their personal, civic & social development.

Programmes & Activities

With the support of Youth Justice Workers, young people can participate in a diverse range of youth work programmes & activities including:

  • Junior Leadership Training & Skills
  • iScoil Educational Programme
  • Animal & Equine Welfare
  • Civic & Social Development
  • Sport & Recreation Courses
  • Healthy Eating, Nutrition & Cooking
  • Drug & Alcohol Awareness & Education
  • Creative Art, Woodwork & Music
  • Positive Mental Health & Wellbeing
  • Conflict resolution
  • Understanding Social Media & Cyberbullying
  • Youth Information
  • International Youth Exchanges

OUTCOMES:

Although the individual outcome for each young person varies regarding to individual needs, the general outcomes for young people involved GYDP are:

  • Greater sense of personal worth
  • Improved sense of civic & social involvement
  • Understanding of beneft of educational attachment and/or attainment
  • Increased engagement with pro-social peers
  • Improved use of recreation time

Positive outcomes in these areas have proven to lead to a reduction in their likelihood of a young person offending/re-offending
