Youth Cafés

Youth Cafes are safe, fun places for all young people between 14-19yrs.  Youth Cafes are run buy a committee of young people and supported by youth workers and volunteers.

Youth Cafes offer a space to meet and hang out with friends, grab a coffee or tea or take the opportunity to get involved in activities ranging from workshops, music, hill walking etc…

Limerick currently has four Youth Cafes located across Limerick City and County & are always interested in developing more!

Lava Java’s Youth Cafe is a youth led project right in the centre of Limerick City providing a fun, friendly, active and engaging environment for Limerick’s vibrant and diverse young people. Since its opening in 2007, it has been a youth led service open to all the creative young people of Limerick.

This Youth Cafe is developed by young people for young people. What does that mean? It means that we have a space that welcomes young people regardless of whom they are or where they come from. We’ve created a place that holds the talents and opinions of young people at its core.

It’s not just a place for a cuppa tea…

The youth cafe exists to aid young people in developing interests in their lives. We have an active youth music scene, running both live shows and workshops for young performers and musicians. We are also heavily involved civically, with young people from Lava Java’s actively involved in Limerick Local Heroes, the National Youth Council of Ireland (Vote@16, We’re Here, Hear Us Now) and Comhairle na nÓg. All these and much more (Ultimate Frisbee, trips away, training and development workshops, the list goes on) all make the experience of Limerick’s youth entirely more enjoyable.

We are also present to help young people to become active within their community. This goal is achieved via the Youth Committee. We’re a team and we have one goal-Limerick’s young people will always come first and we will always strive to represent them as best we can.

Our Youth Café is a safe, dedicated, quality, drug and alcohol free meeting space for young people ranging in age from 14 to 21 years. The Youth Café is set up by young people for young people, with adult support. Young people are involved in the planning, researching, decision-making, fundraising and running of the café. This empowerment of young people gives them responsibility and creates a sense of ownership and commitment to the space. These are the aspects that make a youth café so unique.
