West is Best at Youth Games
Newcastlewest Youth Club topped the medal table at last Friday’s county Youth Games as Limerick Youth Service kicked off Youth Work Ireland Week.
After some fierce and friendly competition Newcastlewest emerged victorious in the boy’s soccer competition, with the girls from Ballingarry taking gold their category.
On the basketball court it was Newcastlewest who took top spot and will join their soccer piers and the girls from Ballingarry at this summer’s national finals in Wexford.
In between games young people were kept busy with tabletennis, pool and wii, while Grainne Smith was on hand to offer her nail painting services.
‘It was a great night, made possible by the commitment of the volunteers and on behalf of LYS, I would like to thank them for their support and commitment,’ said Mr. Walsh, Limerick Youth Service.
The evening marked the start of Youth Work Ireland Week. Now in its second year, the week is an opportunity for young people to have their voices heard on a national forum, while also highlighting the importance of Youth Work in the personal and social development of young people.
Limerick Youth Service has a series of events planned for Youth Work Ireland Week, including taking part in this Thursday’s GLOW Lantern event.
‘GLOW-Go Light Our Way will see the nationwide release of lanterns to highlight the contribution that young people give to our communities, while also raising awareness of the challenges they face, such as cutbacks to the youth sector and education,’ said Dermot Troy, LYS.
Since 1973, Limerick Youth Service remains committed to supporting and encouraging young people to be active participants in shaping their futures.
